Hurricane Felicia forces closure of Beaches in Hawaii

a look at the Hurricane Felicia Hawaii Webcamera's shows the rain and wind from Hurricane Felicia starting to hit Hawaii. Reports indicate several Big Island Hawaii beaches and parks will be closed today in preparation for the strike of Hurricane Felicia. Hurricane Felicia is expected to be no stronger than a tropical storm when it makes landfall, but in the meantime high waves resulting from Hurricane Felicia are in the forecast for Hawaii.






Hurricane forecasters were predicting heavy rains and flash flooding in Hawaii resulting from Hurricane Felicia from Monday through Wednesday, and Hawaii civil defense agency advised residents of Hawaii to prepare for possible flooding from heavy rains and to secure loose objects.

Saturday's Hurricane forecast was the first to include information from the Air Force Reserve's "Hurricane Hunter" flights. A plane approached hurricane Felicia Friday night and Saturday, with more flights planned this weekend.

As of 4Am on Sunday Aug 9th, 400 AM HST SUN AUG 9 2009 the Central Pacific Hurricane Center has downgraded Felicia from a hurricane to a tropical storm






FOR THE CENTRAL NORTH PACIFIC...BETWEEN 140W AND 180

1. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center has downgraded Felicia from a hurricane to a tropical storm and will issue a public bulletin at 500 am HST under AWIPS header TCMCP2 and WMO header WTPA22. Tropical storm Felicia is currently about 590 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii and moving west around 15 mph.

2. An area of thunderstorms associated with a surface trough is centered about 725 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii is moving west northwest around 25 mph. Slow development is possible over the next two days.

Elsewhere, no tropical cyclones are expected through Tuesday morning.
