HURRICANE GUILLERMO

Hurricane Guillermo has formed far out in the Pacific Ocean.

The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Guillermo's maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph with some strengthening possible Friday. But it's expected to weaken Saturday as it moves over cooler water.

Guillermo is centered about 1,100 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. It's moving west near 15 mph.

FORECASTER ROBERTS/BEVEN

As the remnants of Hurricane Felicia drifted away yesterday,
HURRICANE GUILLERMO has formed and has the potential to bring winds and rain was heading toward the Hawaiian Islands.

As of last night, HURRICANE GUILLERMO was still approx 1,900 miles east of Hilo but
HURRICANE GUILLERMO is following the same path as Hurricane Felicia. As of 11PM the National Hurricane Center upgraded HURRICANE GUILLERMO to a Category 1 hurricane.
HURRICANE GUILLERMO's has sustained winds of 75 mph which put it just over the threshold.

HURRICANE GUILLERMO is expected to weaken to a tropical depression by the time it nears Hawaii. Hawaii Civil Defense vice director Ed Teixeira reportedHURRICANE GUILLERMO is weaker than Hurricane Felicia — which was a Category 4 hurricane with 140 mph winds at its peak — but HURRICANE GUILLERMO is twice the size.

According to National Weather Service forecaster Derek Wroe HURRICANE GUILLERMO won't have as much time as Hurricane Felicia to gather strength over warm water and is expected to weaken if it continues moving west-southwest toward cooler waters.

If HURRICANE GUILLERMO continues along its current track and speed, it should be within 350 miles of the Big Island by Tuesday, Wroe said.

Regardless of the lightened threat, Civil defense officials around Hawaii are on alert.

"We need to watch this one," Teixeira said. "We have to be on our toes and watch developments. ... If it's not Guillermo, it will be another storm system developing that could be a threat to the Hawaiian Islands.

"The forecasts still show this one ... moving into cooler waters and then weakening."

Cooler ocean temperatures weaken hurricanes. That's what happened to Felicia.
